What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a natural approach to health care that treats the causes of physical problems not just the symptoms. It is a science & art that does not use surgery or drugs. It is the largest most rapidly growing health care profession of the world. It is based on the premise that a normal functioning spine in its optimal alignment with a healthy lifestyle of nutrition, cleanliness, & exercise your body is better able to heal itself. This is because the spinal cord, an extension of the brain, protected by the vertebrae is the main pathway of the nervous system. By keeping the spine aligned through chiropractic adjustments your body can avoid interference, and correct the imbalances that cause disease and illness without the use of drugs.

How do I know I need an adjustment?

Chiropractors look for misalignments called “subluxations”, which results in nerve stress or interference and unless you are a chiropractor you can’t always tell if it’s there. It’s sort of like a dental cavity. You may have it a very long time before symptoms appear. To avoid complications & serious problems chiropractors recommend occasional spinal check-ups. Just like in dentistry, how often depends on your personal medical history.

What causes A Spinal Misalignment? Or Subluxation?

Some of the most common causes are;
1. Difficult infant deliveries
2. Toddlers falling
3. Poor posture or improper sleeping positions
4. Slip & fall and sports injuries
5. Car accidents
6. Using the same body movements repeatedly i.e. computer, sewing
7. Emotional stress, trauma, anxiety
8. Lack of exercise and or excessive weight gain
9. Incorrect lifting or carrying of heavy loads.
10. Lack of sleep or relaxation;exhaustion

What causes the popping sound of an adjustment?

Not all adjustments produce sounds. However the doctor will feel the spinal “release” There are many ways to adjust producing the same positive results. Research reveals that the popping sound is a gaseous release filling a partial vacuum created as the joints are separated.

Can I adjust myself?

Not a good idea because it is almost impossible to isolate a particular vertebrae in the correct line of direction. Even chiropractors don’t adjust themselves. Cracking or popping may give you temporary relief, but soon the urge to pop returns because the subluxation has not been corrected.

Are chiropractors Medical Doctors and do they work in Hospitals?

Chiropractors have Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degrees from Chiropractic Universities rather than medical doctors (M.D.s) who have degrees from medical schools. The 1st four years of chiropractic and medical schools are very similar. They differ in the respect that chiropractors don’t prescribe drugs or do surgery just as medical doctors do not correct the subluxation complex. In regards to a more hopeful future, chiropractors are beginning to have privileges in many hospitals.

How often should I see a Chiropractor? Is it addictive & what happens if I stop going?

You can see a chiropractor as often as you need to. You can choose one or a few visits for pain relief, more visits for treating the cause of the symptoms thus holding the alignment and a lifetime of visits for occasional maintenance care. It’s not addictive, but you begin to notice when you are out of alignment. Many people think that when the symptoms disappear, there is no need for further care. I want to not only restore your health, but to maintain it. If you quit treatment before correction is made, subluxations can lead to degeneration and your spinal health will suffer.
